A GS1 Digital Link QR code and a plain QR code linking to a product page look identical to a phone camera. That difference is why retailers, regulators, and brand systems are converging on GS1 Digital Link specifically, rather than QR codes in general, and it's worth understanding before choosing a tool to generate one.

## What a GS1 Digital Link QR code actually is

At its simplest, GS1 Digital Link is a way of writing a product identifier — most commonly a GTIN, GS1's Global Trade Item Number — as a standard web URL, so that the same code can be read by an ordinary phone camera and also parsed programmatically by any system that understands the format. Scan it with a phone and you land on a web page; feed it into a retailer's inventory system or a regulator's lookup tool and the same code resolves to structured data, because the identifier sits in a predictable place in the URL rather than being buried inside an arbitrary link. A brand can also attach a "resolver" in front of that identifier — a service that decides where to send different types of request, so a consumer scan and a retailer's stock check can be pointed at different destinations from the same code, without maintaining two separate systems or reprinting anything on-pack.

## How it's different from a plain QR code linking to a product page

A QR code that just encodes `yourbrand.com/product123` works fine for a human scanning it, but it tells a computer nothing about what "product123" actually is, which standard it follows, or how to look it up anywhere else. GS1 Digital Link fixes that by defining a syntax — where the GTIN sits in the URL path, how a batch or serial number is appended, what a receiving system should expect — so that any GS1-conformant reader, anywhere, can extract the same structured identifier from the same code. That syntax is itself built on ISO/IEC 18975, an international standard published in November 2024 that governs encoding and resolving identifiers over HTTP; GS1 Digital Link is the specific implementation of it that GS1 maintains for trade identifiers like the GTIN. In practice, this is the difference between a code that only works with the app you built and a code that keeps working if you switch systems, sell through a partner's platform, or a regulator's tool needs to read it directly.

## Why retailers are moving this way — and why "Sunrise 2027" isn't a legal mandate

Retailers and consumer goods companies are pushing toward 2D barcodes like QR codes at the point of sale under an initiative the industry calls Sunrise 2027 — a GS1 board-level goal that retail point-of-sale systems globally should be able to scan 2D barcodes, alongside existing 1D barcodes, by the end of 2027. It's important to be precise about what this is: an industry-coordinated ambition and transition plan backed by major retailers and brand owners, not a law, and not a date by which every product must carry a GS1 Digital Link code. What it does mean commercially is that retailers are actively building the scanning infrastructure to read these codes at checkout, which is exactly the kind of thing that makes a QR code on-pack worth more over time — the same code that drives a customer to a product page today is more likely to be usable at the till tomorrow, without being reprinted.

## Where GS1 Digital Link intersects with the digital product passport, and where it doesn't

This matters most for brands that sell through more than one channel — a manufacturer supplying both a supermarket and its own direct-to-consumer store, say — because today they often maintain a barcode for point-of-sale and a completely separate QR code for marketing, with no shared data between them. A GS1 Digital Link code can do both jobs from one printed mark, which is one reason large retailers are participating in the transition rather than waiting to be told to.

It's tempting to assume the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR, Regulation (EU) 2024/1781) requires GS1 Digital Link by name. It doesn't. [As we've set out in more detail on digital product passport requirements](/blog/digital-product-passport-requirements), Article 10 of the ESPR requires a passport's data carrier and unique product identifier to comply with standards listed in Annex III — which references the GTIN under ISO/IEC 15459-6, among others — or equivalent standards, not GS1 Digital Link specifically. GS1 is a recognised issuing agency for ISO/IEC 15459-conformant identifiers, and GS1 Digital Link is the web-enabled way of carrying a GTIN that satisfies that requirement, which is why GS1 and most of the DPP technical community treat it as a natural fit for ESPR compliance. But the legal text itself is standard-agnostic: a brand isn't non-compliant for using a different ISO/IEC 15459-conformant scheme, and choosing GS1 Digital Link is a practical decision rather than one the regulation forces directly.
