What every pair will need to carry

Three layers the connected shoe is built on

Footwear is in the first wave of ESPR priority categories. SmartLinks turns a tongue label, insole print, or box sticker into the data layer regulators, retailers and customers all read from — one GS1 Digital Link QR, many audiences.

Composition & provenance

Upper, lining and sole materials, country of last substantial transformation, supplier identity and tannery/factory references — verifiable from the shoe.

Maps to ESPR Article 9 and the textile delegated act expected in 2026. See the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles.

Fit, care & repair

Size and width guides, break-in and care instructions, resoling and repair routing, warranty registration — surfaced when the customer scans, not buried on a box.

Supports the EU Right to Repair Directive (2024/1799) and reduces sizing-driven returns.

Resale & end-of-life

Authentication for second-hand markets, take-back triggers, and material recovery routing — keeping the brand in the loop long after the first sale.

Aligns with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's circular fashion thesis: resale, rental and repair projected at ~23% of the fashion market by 2030.

Footwear DPP & connected packaging — common questions

Where does the QR physically live on a shoe?+

There's no single answer — the shoe dictates the substrate. The most common placements are tongue labels, insole prints, box stickers, and (for premium leather goods) the inside heel. The GS1 Digital Link specification means the same identifier resolves to whichever experience the scanner needs, regardless of where it's printed. We help brands pick the substrate that survives the wear pattern of each line.

Does the EU Digital Product Passport actually apply to footwear, or just clothing?+

Both. Footwear falls inside the ESPR textile priority scope under Regulation (EU) 2024/1781. The framework regulation is in force; the textile-specific delegated act is expected in 2026 with enforcement from 2027. Brands tagging new collections from 2025 onwards build the data ahead of the rule rather than retro-fitting every SKU under deadline pressure. Background in our DPP for fashion and apparel by 2027 guide.

Can a single QR reduce returns and also serve compliance?+

Yes — that's the point of one identifier with context-aware routing. The same scan can show a width-and-fit guide to a customer about to return a pair, a composition record to a market-surveillance inspector, and a stock record to a retailer's mobile POS. The connected garment work in the wider EU Textiles Strategy explicitly anticipates this multi-audience use of the DPP.

What about resale of premium sneakers and limited drops?+

Authentication on resale is one of the strongest commercial cases for tagging footwear at all. A scanned pre-owned pair can be verified against the production batch, the original owner re-engaged with a take-back or care offer, and the brand can route the resale through its own channel rather than losing the customer to a third-party marketplace. See the broader pattern in our luxury goods authentication guide.
