What Fan Connect™ actually does for merchandise

Three jobs every piece of merch is being asked to do

Sports, music, film and esports merchandise all share the same on-product pressure: prove it's real, connect the buyer to the IP holder, and turn a one-off transaction into a lasting fan relationship.

Authentication against counterfeit

NTAG 424 NFC, dual-chip form factors and serialised QR — tamper-evident proof the shirt, signature or limited drop is genuine.

Counterfeit merchandise is part of the OECD/EUIPO USD 464bn global trade in fakes.

Direct fan-to-IP-holder channel

Behind-the-scenes content, signed video, ticket pre-sales, VIP drops — surfaced through the item the fan already paid for.

Owns the relationship the way a GS1 Digital Link owns the URL — one identifier, many audiences.

Verified resale & secondary revenue

Provenance follows every transfer on platforms like eBay, StockX and category marketplaces — and the IP holder can earn margin on each resale.

Backed by optional blockchain ownership records for limited drops where public provenance matters.

Merchandise & Fan Connect™ — common questions

How big is the counterfeit problem for sports and music merchandise?+

The OECD/EUIPO Global Trade in Fakes report sized the global counterfeit market at around USD 464bn in 2019, with apparel and accessories — including licensed sports and music merch — as one of the largest categories. The WIPO Brand Reputation Compass tracks the reputational damage that follows.

What's the difference between Fan Connect™ and a regular NFC tag?+

A regular NFC tag opens a URL. Fan Connect™ binds the chip to a specific item, registers ownership, serves role-appropriate content (fan, reseller, IP rights manager), and writes resale events to either the SmartLinks ledger or an optional public chain. The Fan Connect platform overview walks through the underlying loop.

Do I need a blockchain to do this?+

No. The platform is 'blockchain-optional'. Most merchandise programmes start with off-chain authentication and ownership records; high-end limited editions and POAPs use Ethereum, Flow or Solana for public provenance. The decision is per-product, not per-tenant.

Does the same system work for esports peripherals and digital-native fandoms?+

Yes — the esports flow pairs the same NFC infrastructure with PFP unlocks, in-game cosmetics and tournament access. Game studios use it for limited-run keyboards, headsets and controllers tied to pro teams.

How does this affect retail partners and licensees?+

It reinforces them rather than replaces them. Each tag carries a 'first sold by' attribution that survives forever, so retailers can be rewarded on the lifetime value of a fan they originated, not just the initial transaction. Case studies including the 2003 England Rugby World Cup legends' programme are on the Fan Connect case studies page.
